In 1964 Neptune introduced the first absolute encoder register.

Neptune believed that both the local visual reading and the remote electronic reading should come from the same source.

That way, there can't be errors.

The ProRead (ARB® VI) absolute encoder provides data integrity by encoding the actual position of the register odometer and providing error-free remote electronic meter reading capability.

Despite being hard to see, there are electronic boards between each dial to record the odometer position.
